What is a manly man? For centuries men have been defined as being strong, confident, successful, or “manly.” But what exactly does being “manly” mean? Being “manly” has often been looked at as being the opposite of feminine. Women have always been looked at as being sensitive, and men are seen as strong and detached from their emotions. In recent years there has been a major shift in the social view of what it means to be a male or female, as well as what it means to be “manly.” Although women are still looking for strength, success, and confidence in men, many women are also searching for a man who’s in touch with his sensitive side. With a desire for men to be more sensitive and caring, some jobs that were once thought to be solely for the female professions are now being opened up and encouraged to men. One of those careers is nursing.

Why is being a male nurse “manly”?
Male Nurses are Confident – According to a study done in 1996 by the National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses, about 5.4% of all Registered Nurses in the United States were men. Even though that number has steadily increased over the last decade, when it comes to nursing, men are still the minority. Most work fields in America are dominated by men instead of women. By choosing not to participate in a career where men already have an advantage, male nurses display a true sense of confidence that many men in other professions cannot claim.
Male Nurses are Leaders – A leader is often thought to be the first person to conquer uncharted territories in order to inspire and guide others. We are now at a time of social change where the roles of male and female are being questioned. By participating in a career that is thought to have been “of the female profession,” male nurses are leading society to be more comfortable in their roles as individuals as well as men and women.
Male Nurses are Strong – Many men who feel comfortable with bending traditional gender roles display a sense of strength that others do not. As more focus is being placed on an individual’s mind instead of their physical strength, being emotionally strong is extremely important.
Male Nurses are Sensitive – A nurse must be aware and responsive to their patient’s needs. This requires a great deal of sensitivity. In order to care for a patient successfully, a nurse must pay close attention to the problems that their patient is experiencing; they must be understanding, while helping to find a solution that best fits their patient’s needs.
Male Nurses are Successful – A Registered Nurse earns an average of $64,690 annually. Some nursing professions earn less, but others such as Nurse Anesthetists earn an average of $113,000 a year. Almost $10,000 a month is definitely a successful earning.
Male Nurses Can Be Bachelors, Too – Nursing is a great and growing profession. Nursing positions and LPN Programs are available in every state in America. It is easy to seek reciprocity in any state that you could wish to move to. Nursing hours are flexible. There are many different areas of emphasis in nursing, as well as many positions that allow you to travel. As a bachelor, having a career in nursing will do anything but tie you down.
As you can see, practical nursing is a job with great opportunities that are well suited for many men.
