The SAT is one of the most crucial tests your child will ever take. Scoring well on it can help your child get their foot in the door to a prestigious university. If your child is preparing to take the SAT, there are certain ways you can help them.

Advanced Courses

It is a good idea to encourage your child to take advanced courses when they are young. The subject matter of these classes should challenge your child while still staying within their learning capabilities. Cramming for the SAT at the last minute is certainly not the best idea, and taking these advanced classes will allow your child to prepare years in advance for many of the SAT subjects.

Encourage Your Child to Read

This will particularly come in handy when your child comes across the vocabulary and grammar sections of the test. They should be encouraged to become avid readers when they are young. Reading can help establish a solid base of language concepts at an early age.

Know the Test Format

Knowing the format of the test will help your child understand what they should expect. The test is divided into sections of multiple-choice questions and covers various subjects such as mathematics, vocabulary and critical reading. Even if your child says that they already know what to expect, it is still a good idea to discuss the testing format with them just to make sure that they have a clear understanding.

Give a Practice Test

Your child should be given a practice test as a warm-up. SAT practice tests can easily be found online. Give your child the test just as the testing administrator would. Your child should be equipped with all of the testing day supplies they will need such as No. 2 pencils and a calculator. Make sure to also use a timer while your child is taking the practice test in order to make sure they are able to answer all of the questions within the time constraint.

Keep Your Child Calm

One of the biggest hurdles your child will face on testing day will be their anxiety. Since the test is so important, it is expected that they will have to deal with some nervousness. Try to encourage your child to practice calmer and slower breathing and maintain focus. It is also important that they get enough sleep leading up to the test, as this will also help the mind stay focused and at ease.

Taking the steps to get your child ready for the SAT can help ensure their success. The test will likely seem much easier for your child if they have been properly prepared. Getting a high score on the test will certainly be one of their proudest life achievements.
