Entertaining children may seem like a challenging task, but it can be a lot of fun too. There are plenty of things to do around the house that are both entertaining and cheap. Here are some ideas:

1) Build a fort - The couch doesn’t have to be just for watching TV, it can also be the base for a blanket fort. Gather up some old blankets, sheets, and a good supply of clothes pins, and turn the living room into one big fort. Building it is lots of fun, and afterwards children can read stories, have a picnic, color, play make-believe, or any other game that strikes their fancy inside it.
2) Popsicle Stick Crafts - Popsicle sticks are cheap, easy to use craft supplies that are very versatile. Picture frames, boxes, houses, etc can be made from them, and then decorated with other materials. Things can get a bit messy, but with supervision, children can make all sorts of things. These projects can make great homemade gifts as well!
3) Have a Dance Party - Sometimes it is fun to just rock out at home. Make a list of everyone’s favorite dance songs, get dressed up, and have a living room dance party. Not only is it fun for the whole family, but it’s also great exercise.
4) Bake Cookies from Scratch - Baking with children is not only fun for them, but also teaches them about fractions and math. While they’re helping create something yummy, they’re also learning. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon, and everyone will enjoy fresh, warm cookies out of the oven.
5) Run through the Sprinkler - This is a great way to beat the summer heat, especially if you don’t have a pool. Set up a sprinkler in the back yard and get the kids into bathing suits. It’s tons of fun, and the grass gets watered at the same time!
6) The Floor is Lava! – In this game, there is only one rule- no one’s feet can touch the floor. Kids have to figure out ways to get to and from different pieces of furniture without ever touching the floor with any body parts.
7) Living Room Picnic - Pack a picnic in a basket, but instead of going outside, take it to the living room! Spread a blanket or tablecloth on the floor, and have the food you prepared together picnic style. This is great for winter when outdoor picnics aren’t feasible, but they can be fun during any season.
All it really takes to entertain children is a little patience and a lot of imagination!
