If you are happy with the current layout of your kitchen cabinets, and the cabinets themselves have good bones, then your cabinets are a perfect candidate for refacing.
Refacing isn’t just slapping on a new coat of paint and adding new hardware. While paint and hardware are a great low cost alternative, it doesn’t have nearly as high of an impact as refacing.
Refacing entails removing and replacing the cabinet doors and side panels with a fresh look. On almost every refacing job that I have ever been involved with, you would think that the cabinets have been completely removed and replaced.
Whether or not you replace your countertops, get yourself a new tile backsplash that covers the entire surface between your counter and the bottom of your cabinets. The area between the countertop and upper cabinets is one of the most underutilized surfaces in the kitchen. Stone countertops offer some of the best return on investment that you can get out of your home. You’ll also enjoy the conveniences that natural stone has to offer.
Moving appliances to new locations in the kitchen can be a costly proposition. Replacing them with new appliances however, is inexpensive in comparison.
You can often get a new set of appliances for a great price when you buy all of the appliances as part of a package. Local appliance stores may not openly offer you a discount for buying a refrigerator, dishwasher, and stove but they’ll more than likely give a 10%-20% discount if you ask.
Replacing a kitchen floor with high quality tiles can be a very expensive undertaking. Of course you can get linoleum or stick on tiles but you won’t recoup the investment. Save up for tile and in the mean time consider using area rugs.
Buy a beautiful area rug for under the table and a couple small throw rugs for in front of the sink and stove. They won’t cost you much in the short term and will allow you to save up for tile.
