How New Window Treatments Can Revive Your Home On A Budget

Window Blinds can set the mood of the room. Pic from the author.

Whether you have a new home and your starting with a blank slate, or you just think it’s time to re-do your existing home, one of the easiest places to start is the windows. Having your window dressing done right can pull a room together, make it look larger, or just enhance the view.

However, if you’ve been pricing window accessories lately, you know it’s not a cheap endeavor. Window furnishings are surprisingly expensive! But with a little know how, and some small effort on your part, you can transform those windows for far less than the store charges!

Consider the Lighting

Lighting can make or break the room. So before you go about buying shades, blinds or draperies, think carefully of what you’re trying to accomplish. If it’s a bedroom, and you like uninterrupted sleep, you’ll want something heavier, to block light out. But in the kitchen or living room, something lighter and more airy can bring vibrancy to a popular family gathering spot.

Fabric, Fabric, Fabric!

Fabric is an easy and inexpensive way to pull a room together. When you’re choosing the fabric for your windows, make sure it matches other fabrics in the room, either in color or texture. A great way to do this in the kitchen is to simply use a vintage tablecloth for as a simple blind hung over a curtain rod halfway up the window.

Simple Fixes are Simply Wonderful

Before you go all out, consider ways to just change what you have. If all the parts of your window dressing are plain and unobtrusive, why not leave them and just change the fabric? Or maybe repainting the trim will give new life to those dull curtains!  Even just changing the finials can make your windows pop where before they just fizzled.

A Draped Window is a Happy Window

Hanging drapery panels wider and higher than the actual window will cause it to look larger. And larger windows make it feel like the room itself is larger. It’s a tasteful way to redo a room while doing almost nothing.

PVC and Tennis Balls

Instead of spending a ton of money on new curtain rods and finials, buy a length of PVC pipe and some tennis balls. Paint the pipe whatever color you desire or leave it white; it’s your choice. Then cut a hole out of the tennis balls just large enough for the pipe to fit. Wrap a square of cloth around the tennis ball and stick the loose ends into the hole. Once you put the ball on the pvc pipe, it’ll keep the cloth from slipping or falling off. Now you have a curtain rod and two fabric wrapped finials for a fraction of the price. This is a great way to make a rod that can stretch for larger windows.

Appliques

A quick and easy way to make  an old  curtain new is to add an applique. Cut abstract or geometric patterns into it, and then simply add it to the existing curtains. It’s quick, easy, and can look amazing.

These are just a few of the different things to consider when you’re redoing your window treatments. There are many other ways to save money, and a little time spent browsing the internet will give you plenty more ideas.
