Seven Tips to Improve your Home’s Green Credentials

There are so many advantages to making your home more energy efficient like lowering the costs of your energy bills, boosting your personal comfort and helping to save the environment. With an increase in energy prices and consumers becoming aware of the tumultuous effects of energy production, the need for environmentally renewable energy sources keeps growing. However, you can make small changes to the way you live each day that will have a great impact on the environment. The following are seven changes you can make around your home to help lower the carbon discharge:

1. Raising the energy efficiency throughout your home requires a different attitude. Begin by making small changes and change wasteful habits with those that can save you big in the future. Not only will this be beneficial to you from a financial standpoint, but also environmentally.

2. Think back to the days of your mum and dad following you around the house and turning off the lights. Just by switching off the lights when you’re not in that room can help save a lot of energy. Also change traditional fluorescent light bulbs with energy saving bulbs. For additional energy savings, plug major electronics into a power strip so that you can easily turn them off when you’re not using them.

3. Appliances generated by heat can waste a tremendous amount of energy. Eliminate unnecessary use of these appliances by baking several items together and boiling the exact amount of water that is needed for a recipe instead of the entire pot. Also, to keep the temperatures more constant, wrap an insulation blanket around the hot water heater.

4. Energy can often escape through windows, walls and doors. Depending on the season use draperies or blinds to help keep in the warm or cool air. Properly seal window and door cracks with caulk. You can save on energy by turning down your thermostat a couple degrees in the winter time and up a couple of degrees in the summer time. Also, dress accordingly to the season and temperature fluctuations.

5. Think about purchasing energy-efficient appliances, especially a new condensing boiler. It may be more costly at the start, but it will save you more money in the future and it’s better for the environment.

6. If you have older windows, consider replacing them with double-glazing windows. They will not only save you money and energy, but they will also keep you warmer.

7. Check out the feasibility of green energy sources like wind and solar power. If you are thinking about staying in your home for a substantial amount of time, “free” sources of energy do pay for themselves.

With the increase in energy costs, consumers are feeling the pinch in their pocket books. Plus with the adverse effects to the environment, people are highly motivated to find positive solutions when it comes to home energy efficiency. By starting with simple daily changes, we can have a dramatic effect on our environment.

Currently it’s legally required to have an Energy Performance Certificate in the UK if you’re letting or selling a dwelling, making the advantages of going green even greater.
