Dating. It would be so much easier if we could read the minds of men. But one thing is for sure, first impressions are king; as the male mind is a visual being. Make no mistake he’s sizing you up from across the room and you’ve got 30 seconds (it’s fact, I checked) to get it right.

There is a saying that says women dress to impress other women; but in the dating game, men use what your wear to sum you up. Here’s what subliminal messages your outfits may be sending to potential suitors.
- 5inch heels: As a female I go gaga over a red soled high heel wonder; and so do men. They make legs look longer and bodies appear long and lean- hell, a high heel just looks so powerful. But the guy you’ve been eyeing from across the room is wondering how much fun you can have standing in one place. Plus it worries him; he’s thinking “is she going to sprain an ankle?” As sexy as sky high heels are, in the back of his mind he hoping the first date isn’t going to end in the emergency room.
- Logos a plenty: Logos are everywhere, from Gucci, Fendi, Coach and the like- I get it; but being a walking advertisement is a big red flag to the male species. They see dollar signs, and that is far scarier than a woman with a shirt that says “I want to be married in six months”. It also comes off as shallow and insecure, which aren’t what most would call attractive traits.
- Revealing clothing: To be clear, men LOVE sexy clothes; like I said before, they are visual creatures. But context is everything. A short skirt is perfect for a first date and even the fifth date; but the same skirt is completely wrong for the first family dinner or meeting his bro’s. Sexy is good; timing is everything.
- Shapeless Clothing: If a guy is interested in you, he’s interested in ALL of you; and when you wear shapeless clothing he fears that you don’t like you as much as he does. Wearing shapeless clothing makes guys worry that you may be ashamed of the shape they so enjoy. It’s true that a big, flowing sweater is uber comfortable; but save it for a sick day or a period week.
At the end of the day if you are comfortable in your skin then you are inevitably winning the game. What a guy reads into your outfit choice can be superseded by a smile and a glow that comes from confidence. But to ace that 30 second window, dress the part- you’ll be glad you did!
