Buying Christmas Presents Early Can Save You Money

Although it may seem like a pain to shop for Christmas gifts early, there are numerous benefits in doing so. For example, the stores won’t be nearly as crowded, you won’t feel like you’re being rushed, and you actually will have the time to put some thought into the gift you are buying instead of grabbing something generic because Christmas is in two hours. The best thing about starting your Christmas shopping early is that you can save money on your purchases.

People who wait until the last minute to go Christmas shopping tend to waste a lot of money since they don’t have many options left at that point. For example, let’s say your kid asked you for a particular toy. Two days before Christmas, you go to buy the toy only to find it for sale at an outrageous price. Since you don’t have time to find a cheaper place to buy the toy or to figure out an alternative gift, you end up paying the higher price. This is a bad reason to pay extra money; if you had simply started your shopping earlier and been strategic about it, this last minute situation could have been avoided.

You don’t have to drive yourself crazy by starting six months ahead of time – starting one or two months before Christmas is probably early enough. During the fall and early winter months, there are usually lots of great sales, so just keep your eyes open for deals. One day you’re guaranteed to get great prices is Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. Even if you don’t wake up super early and stand in line outside of a store, you can still get a bargain.

It’s easier to find bargains on certain days of the week. For example, the best time to shop for clothing is on Thursday night; many clothing stores get new shipments of clothing that day and put their old clothing out on sale early so they can get the inventory moving. If your local department store advertises big markdowns on Sunday, check out the store on Saturday night to see if they’ve started their sales a bit early.

If you are looking for a particularly popular toy or item, try to get that item out of the way first; when Christmas shopping season starts, those will be the first items gone from the store. If you would prefer to avoid stores altogether, start your early shopping online. Many people don’t like shopping online because they feel that after they have added in the shipping costs, they might as well have gone to an actual store, but plenty of websites, such as amazon.com, do offer free shipping.
