How To Help Your Child Get A Good Nights Slumber

A decent night of rest is important for a growing child, both for their physical well-being and their emotional health as well. A weary child will be restless and cranky and not perform well at school. Setting up your child with a routine at bedtime is the first step to ensuring a lifetime of good sleeping habits.

Establish a set routine and stick with it every single night. Eventually the child will associate the pre-bedtime routine with sleep and will fall asleep faster and easier. First start out with a warm bath or shower to relax your child and make them a little drowsy. Then perhaps a small snack with a glass of milk while you read your children a story from a book or they may also quietly watch some television. Then brush their teeth and march them off to bed with a gentle but firm reminder that it is time for sleep.

But before you can do any of that, you need to take a good long look at your child’s bedroom. Is it comfortable, warm and cosy? Too bright? Many people find room darkening curtains to be a life saver. They filter out all the light that may shine in and wake the child. You can find many room darkening curtains in fun prints that will make your child’s room cheerful and pleasant, all while helping to maintain a good night’s rest!

Make sure the room is not too warm. People sleep better when the room is not too hot. Pile on some warm covers in soft fabrics and make sure your child has their favourite stuffed animal or doll with them in bed to bring them comfort and security. Some children benefit from having a small nightlight. Choose one that is dim and place it in a spot where it won’t shine on your child’s face and keep him awake

Soft music playing in the background seems to help soothe a child who is having trouble sleeping, or white noise such as a fan. You can also buy soothing sound machines now. These sound machines have different sound settings and you can choose from white noise, rain, birds, or sounds simulating the sound of a heartbeat in the womb. Many children find this particularly comforting.

If your child continues to wake through the night, gently lead them back to bed and remind them that they need to rest in order for them to grow properly. Soothe them for a few moments and then leave the room again. This may have to be repeated several times, but it does work eventually!

So, check your child’s room for comfort and establish a fun but relaxing bedtime routine and then you will be on your way to having a child who sleeps straight through the night! Both of you deserve that, so stick with it and your child will learn great sleeping habits that will benefit him for the rest of his life.
